Sambhal Violence Over Mosque Survey
Sambhal remained on the edge since last Tuesday when a team of surveyors visited the Jama Masjid on a local court’s order on a complaint that the mosque was built on a temple.
The officials said the survey was not completed on Tuesday and was planned for Sunday morning to avoid interference with prayers that are usually held in the afternoon.
Gopal Sharma, a local lawyer for the Hindu side, had earlier claimed the temple that once stood at the site was demolished by Mughal emperor Babur in 1529.
On Sunday, trouble started early when a large group of people gathered near the mosque and started shouting slogans as the survey team began its work.
Supreme Court lawyer Vishnu Shankar Jain, said the survey team conducted a detailed examination of the site, supported by videography and photography as per the court’s directives.Indian High Commission to London hosts 2nd Indo-Pacific Conference
