Delhi Student Suicide: Protests Erupt At St. Columba’s – Did School Ignore His Suicidal Warning?

After a 16-year-old Delhi student died by suicide earlier this week following allegations of harassment by teachers, protests erupted outside St. Columba’s School in Ashok Place on Friday (November 21).

The student’s family members, along with several others, gathered outside the school gate, demanding the arrest of the teachers named in the suicide note.

Meanwhile, the school has yet to issue an official statement to parents regarding the incident.

Despite the growing outrage, the school has not yet issued an official statement to parents about the incident.

One of the protesters outside the school said that suspension won’t do anything, as it is a temporary measure. He further demanded to arrest the teachers.

‘Student told teacher about suicidal thoughts’

One of the family members of the student demanded that the teachers be hanged to death for mentally harassing their child, which led to his suicide. “They are suspended from this school, but in future, they will get another job. It is not enough. The responsible teachers should be hanged to death.”

The boy’s uncle further alleged that the student had even told the school counsellor about having suicidal thoughts, but they did not pay attention to it.

“The boy went to the School Counsellor that day. He told her that he is having suicidal thoughts. Instead of alerting the parents and being sensitive to his concerns, the counsellor said he should go and that he would be okay,” the uncle said.

He added that they were anyway going to remove the boy from this school, yet he was being threatened with a TC. “Teachers should be counselled as well. They need to be sensitised,” the student’s uncle stressed.

St Columba’s Headmaster, 3 Teachers Suspended

Earlier today, the school suspended the headmaster and three teachers named in the FIR filed by the student’s father. The tragic incident has triggered grief, anger, and a demand for accountability from parents, with the family protesting outside the school.

In identical suspension letters, Principal Robert Fernandes said the staff members would remain suspended until the investigation is completed. He wrote, “In view of the seriousness of the allegations, the competent authority has decided to place you under suspension with immediate effect.”

He instructed the suspended teachers to remain available for inquiries and barred them from visiting the school or interacting with students, parents, or staff without written permission.

Student Leaves behind Suicide Note

The deceased, who had been studying in the school since Class 2, left behind a heartbreaking note addressed to his mother. In it, he wrote, “Sorry mummy, aapka itni bar dil toda, ab last bar todunga. School ki teachers ab hai hi aise, kya bolu.”

On the day of the incident, during a drama class, the student reportedly fell and was mocked by Yukti Mahajan, one of his teachers, who allegedly told him he was “overacting” and could cry as much as he wanted because it “did not matter” to her.

Student’s father, Pradeep Patil, said the headmaster was present during the episode but did not intervene.
