The festival of holi is celebrated over two days, with the first day known as Chhoti Holi, Holika Dahan, or Jalawali Holi. Today is the day of Chhoti Holi.
Meaning, today in the evening, people will light a bonfire that symbolises the burning of the demoness Holika. It also signifies the victory of good over evil. According to Drik Panchang – Holika Dahan Muhurat – March 13, 09:56 PM to 12:20 AM, March 14 (Duration – 2 Hours 23 Mins).Drik Panchang states, “The first preference to get Holika Dahan Muhurta is during Pradosh while Purnimasi Tithi is prevailing and Bhadra is over. If Bhadra prevails during Pradosh but it ends before midnight, then Holika Dahan should be done after Bhadra is over. If Bhadra is getting over after midnight, then only Holika Dahan should be done in Bhadra and preferably during Bhadra Punchha. However, one should avoid Bhadra Mukha, and in no condition should Holika Dahan be done in Bhadra Mukha.”

People Who Are Prohibited From Watching Holika Dahan
On the day of Holika Dahan, women prepare some delectable dishes which is offered to Holika in the evening and worshipped with faith and all the rituals. After which Holika Dahan is carried out at the auspicious time.During this time, women, men and children all watch Holika Dahan with joy and enthusiasm. But some of people are prohibited from watching Holika Dahan including newly married girls and people who have just shifted to new homes.But why is that?
- According to religious beliefs, newly married women should not see the first Holika Dahan of their in-laws. This is the reason why newly married women are asked to celebrate their first Holi at their maternal home.
- A mother-in-law and daughter-in-law should also not watch Holika Dahan together. This can bring harm to their lives.
- Pregnant women should also refrain from seeing Holika, and fathers with one child should also stay away from Holika Dahan. It is said that those who have a single child should not light a fire for Holika Dahan.
- Apart from this, people who have built a new house should also not watch Holika Dahan. Therefore, it is suggested that one should try and enter their new house during Navratri instead of Holi.
