Pakistan spy agency officials visit Bangladesh to reinforce bilateral ties
A delegation from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), led by Major General Shahid Amir Afsar, is currently in Dhaka for a visit scheduled from January 21 to 24. The visit marks one of the firsthigh-level engagements between the ISI and Bangladeshi officialsin decades.
The ISI team includes Brigadiers Alam Amir Awan and Muhammad Usman Zatif. While there were speculations that Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, the Director General of ISI, might join the delegation, he is not part of this visit. The delegation arrived on an Emirates flight, EK-586.Pakistan
This visit follows the recent trip by Lieutenant General Kamr Ul Hasan, the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division of the Bangladesh Army, to Rawalpindi. Military and intelligence exchanges between Pakistan and Bangladesh appear to be gaining momentum, particularly after the political shift in Dhaka following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster from office.
“There have been recent reports of eased travel restrictions for Pakistan ISI and Jamaat elements to Dhaka,” a security analyst noted, pointing to evolving ties between the two countries.
The agenda for the meetings between the ISI delegation and Bangladeshi officials has not been disclosed. However, observers suggest discussions may focus on military and intelligence cooperation, regional security issues, and strengthening mechanisms for intelligence-sharing.
