Washington: Trump Warns Canada of 50% Tariff on Aircraft

Threat follows Canada’s refusal to certify US-made jets, escalating trade tensions between the two countries

Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has warned of imposing a 50% tariff on Canada-made aircraft sold in the United States, marking a fresh escalation in the ongoing trade dispute between the two nations. The move reflects rising tensions between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Earlier, Trump had threatened on social media to impose a 100% tariff on Canadian imports if Canada entered into a trade agreement with China. However, his remarks at the time did not clarify when such import taxes would be enforced, especially since Canada had already signed a trade deal with China.

In his latest warning, Trump said the proposed action would be in response to Canada’s refusal to certify Gulfstream Aerospace jets manufactured in Georgia. The US President stated that, in retaliation, the United States would revoke certification for all Canadian aircraft, including those manufactured by Bombardier.

In a social media post, Trump said, “If for any reason this situation is not corrected immediately, I will impose a 50 percent tariff on all aircraft made in Canada and sold in the United States.”

The statement signals a potential intensification of trade hostilities between the US and Canada, particularly in the aviation and aerospace sectors, if the issue remains unresolved.
