Another round of in-depth discussions with senior MHA officials is anticipated today. Yesterday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah canceled his election rallies in Maharashtra to assess the security situation in Manipur.

On Saturday, widespread violence broke out in various districts of the Imphal Valley as crowds burned property and stormed the homes of multiple MLAs in response to the recovery of women’s and children’s bodies.

Shah gave the MHA officials instructions to take all necessary actions to maintain calm in the Northeastern state after reviewing the security situation in Manipur yesterday.

Since the state’s security situation has been precarious for the past few days, the Home Ministry stated that the security forces have been instructed to take the required actions to bring peace and order back to Manipur.

It went on to say that armed criminals from both sides of the conflict have been using violence, which has resulted in fatalities and disturbances of the peace.

“Anyone attempting to engage in violent or disruptive activities will face severe consequences,” the ministry stated in a statement.

BJP Lawmakers Will Meet

According to those with knowledge of the issue, Chief Minister N Biren Singh is scheduled to host a review meeting with the BJP MLAs on the Manipur situation tonight at 6 p.m. at his home.

It comes a day after the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) withdrew its support to the BJP-led Manipur government led by N Biren Singh.

The Meghalaya chief minister blamed his Manipur counterpart for failing to quell the unrest in his state where violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups has led to months of unrest and has adversely impacted normal life in the state.

Curfew In Imphal, Internet Suspended

In view of the violent protests, a total curfew was imposed in the towns of Imphal West and Imphal East and internet services were suspended in parts of the state.

The state officials informed that in fresh orders, they have imposed internet restrictions in the Jiribam and Pherazwal districts of Manipur for the next two days.

“Total curfew has been immediately clamped in the town until further orders. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended for 02 days immediately. SsP/ COs have been deployed on the ground to manage the law-and-order situation,” the Manipur Police said.

Since May last year, at least 250 people have lost their lives, and 60,000 have been displaced in Manipur due to inter-communal clashes over government grants and quotas in jobs and education.
