Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the 59th DGsP and IGsP Conference 2024, being organised in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar. The gathering will witness the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Ministers of State (Home Affairs), DGP of states and Union Territories and chiefs of Central Police Organisations discussing the current internal security outlook of the country and measures to counter challenges from Left Wing Extremism to militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Although an annual tradition, this year’s IGP/DGP conference holds crucial significance amid emerging issues such as Manipur violence, rising terror activities grappling Jammu and Kashmir, narco-terror nexus and resurgence of organised crime activities. The two-day attendance of Prime Minister Modi also indicates the importance of the 59th iteration of the conference.

Objectives Of DGP/IGP Conference 2024

1. To bring together senior police officials and security administrators to address pressing challenges and enhance strategies for ensuring internal security across the nation.

2. The conference will provide an interactive platform for senior police professionals and security administrators in the country to freely discuss and debate diverse national security-related issues, as well as various operational, infrastructural and welfare-related problems faced by the police in India.

3. Its deliberations will include the formulation and sharing of professional practices and processes for tackling challenges relating to crime control and law and order management, besides internal security threats.

Platform To Discuss Open, Informal Discussion

Apart from these, the conference also presents an opportunity for the DGPs and IGPs to directly interact with the PM and discuss with him the ideas and challenges on critical policing and internal security challenges.

“The Prime Minister not only listens attentively to all contributions but also fosters an environment of open and informal discussions, allowing for the emergence of new ideas,” a PMO press release stated.

Why Crucial In 2024

The country is faced with various internal security challenges ranging from recent events in Jiribam, Manipur to a surge in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. The event provides a framework for chiefs of paramilitary forces and state police heads to engage in discussion over these crucial issues and chalk out key strategies.

The rise in organised crime such as criminal gangs which have the potential to disturb the internal security situation might be among one of the key areas of discussion as it normally pertains to inter-state policing.
