Banks will remain shut in Shillong region, which loosely reflects to a bank holiday in Meghalaya on Friday, 12 December. In the upcoming week, banks will be closed across the country on Saturday, 13 September, as it will be the second Saturday of the month. The RBI has made bank holidays mandatory on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Additionally, the bank holiday across India will extend to Sunday as well.
The Reserve Bank of India has listed 18 bank holidays in December 2025, with several of them varying by state. While Christmas on December 25 will see a nationwide shutdown, many other closures apply only to specific cities. Customers are advised to verify local timings before visiting branches.
Under RBI rules, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks “will observe public holiday on the second and fourth Saturdays”. Sundays are regular weekly offs as well. Together with national and regional holidays, this creates a dense December calendar that can affect cash, cheque and branch-dependent work.
The RBI holiday list for December 2025 covers national events, religious occasions and local commemorations. Panaji, Shillong, Gangtok, Aizawl, Kohima, Imphal and other centres have distinct observances. These dates apply to the respective jurisdictions only, so people and businesses must track the locations relevant to their accounts.
