From 7 Days to 3 Months: The Rajasthan High Court on Monday extended rape convict Asaram Bapu’s interim bail by nearly 2 months. The self-styled ‘godman’, who is serving life imprisonment in a rape case, will remain out on bail till July 1. The division bench comprising Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vineet Kumar allowed Asaram’s plea on medical grounds on the same conditions as laid down by the Supreme Court, which includes a prohibition on any sermon or gathering with his devotees.
The respondent’s counsel PC Solanki had objected to the plea and argued that he had violated the bail conditions by holding sermons for the devotees at his Indore ashram. Previously, Asaram was granted a 7-day parole in 2018, which was extended by five days, and then by some more over several months. Most recently, he received a 17-day parole on December 10, 2024, and on January 7, the Supreme Court granted him interim bail till March 31. This has been extended till July by the Rajasthan HC’s latest order. The development comes days after the father of the rape survivor expressed concern over Asaram’s bail. He said that his family faces increased danger as the self-proclaimed godman “can do anything” to them anytime, PTI reported.”When Asaram was in jail, it was our victory. Now he is managing everyone. I am surprised that the court is repeatedly granting interim bail to Asaram, first for seven days, then 12 days, then two and a half months and now for three months,” the survivor’s father told PTI. “What kind of illness does he have? Now the danger to our family has increased. He can do anything to us at any time. Now we are only dependent on God,” he said.
