Final Decision: PM Modi to Skip Bangladesh Swearing-In, But India Sends Top Representative

Om Birla to Attend Ceremony as BNP’s Tarique Rahman Set to Take Oath

New Delhi: In a major political development, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a sweeping victory in Bangladesh’s general elections held on February 12, 2026. The party won 212 out of 300 seats, clearing the way for its chairman Tarique Rahman to assume office as the new Prime Minister — a leadership change expected to influence political and diplomatic dynamics across the region.

Amid speculation over India’s representation at the swearing-in ceremony, it has now been confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the event in Dhaka. However, India will be represented at a high level.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will participate in the oath-taking ceremony scheduled for February 17, 2026, in Dhaka. The event marks the formal assumption of office by the new government led by Tarique Rahman.

The decision to send the Lok Sabha Speaker is being viewed as a symbol of the deep and enduring ties between India and Bangladesh. The two nations share longstanding historical, cultural, and social connections, and their bilateral relationship has steadily strengthened across multiple sectors over the years.

India’s presence at the ceremony is being interpreted as a gesture of continuity and cooperation in bilateral relations. New Delhi has welcomed the formation of the democratically elected government in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also personally congratulated Tarique Rahman over a phone call, acknowledging the clear public mandate received under his leadership.

Analysts believe the new government in Dhaka could play a significant role in ensuring regional stability and development.

Om Birla’s participation underscores India’s commitment to democratic values and its emphasis on maintaining strong, respectful ties with neighboring countries. The move is seen as an important signal toward enhancing dialogue, partnership, and mutual trust between the two nations, further reinforcing the spirit of friendship between India and Bangladesh.
