India’s ‘Sarv Shakti’ Tanker Breaks Through Hormuz Tension, 45,000 Tons LPG Set to Reach Soon

Amid rising tensions between the US and Iran that have nearly halted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, an India-linked LPG tanker, Sarv Shakti, has successfully navigated the critical route. The development is being seen as a major relief for India, which is currently grappling with an energy supply crunch.
According to Marine Traffic data, the tanker is carrying around 45,000 tons of LPG (cooking gas) and is heading towards India. The vessel has already crossed near Larak Island and Qeshm Island, entering the Gulf of Oman.
The ship, sailing under the Marshall Islands flag, has 18 Indian crew members onboard and is en route to a major LNG terminal in Visakhapatnam. It reportedly followed a route designated by Iran to safely pass through the high-risk zone.
Strategic Breakthrough Amid Crisis
The ‘Sarv Shakti’ had entered the Persian Gulf in early February and received its cargo via ship-to-ship transfer near Dubai, though the exact source of the LPG remains unclear. Typically, crossing the Strait of Hormuz takes around 10 to 14 hours.
India, the world’s third-largest oil importer and second-largest LPG consumer, has been facing disruptions due to supply constraints from the Middle East. This has led to shortages, long queues, and restricted distribution in several regions.
Relief for Energy Supply
The safe passage of this tanker is expected to provide some relief to the ongoing supply crisis. Considering the tense situation in West Asia, India has been actively engaging diplomatically with Iran and has so far managed to ensure the safe exit of eight LPG tankers.
Additionally, domestic LPG production in India has been ramped up to around 54,000 tons per day. According to Hardeep Singh Puri, current consumption has dipped to nearly 80,000 tons per day.
Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, the successful journey of ‘Sarv Shakti’ highlights India’s efforts to secure its energy lifelines during challenging times.
