Union Home Minister Amit Shah Visits Assam Today Ahead of Assembly Elections
Two-day tour seen as crucial for NDA strategy, seat-sharing talks, and BJP’s bid for a third consecutive term

Assam: With the Assembly elections approaching, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stepped up its poll preparations in Assam. In this context, the two-day visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah is being seen as highly significant. Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Dibrugarh today, where he will attend a few official programmes before heading to Guwahati to hold key meetings with party leaders and allies to chalk out the election strategy. It is believed that the final framework for seat-sharing within the NDA could be decided during this visit.
According to party sources, Amit Shah’s meetings will focus on presenting the NDA as a united and strong force in the upcoming Assembly elections. The BJP has already made it clear that it will contest the Assam polls in alliance with its partners, with Himanta Biswa Sarma continuing as the party’s chief ministerial face. The election campaign will prominently highlight the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the performance of the state government. The BJP is aiming to return to power for the third consecutive term, which it is projecting as an “Assam hat-trick.”
BJP leaders believe that the state’s political and social dynamics have shifted following the recent delimitation exercise and the special revision of electoral rolls. The party assesses that these changes could work in favour of the NDA. Delimitation has altered the structure of seats in several regions, while revisions in voter lists have added new voters in many areas. Keeping these factors in mind, the BJP is preparing a micro-level election strategy.
Out of the 126 seats in the Assam Assembly, the NDA has set an ambitious target of winning more than 100 seats this time. The BJP’s alliance includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). However, differences between UPPL and BPF remain a challenge for the NDA. The BJP leadership is making efforts to resolve these issues so that the alliance can contest the elections in a cohesive and united manner.
