Priyanka Gandhi Attacks Government Over US Trade Deal

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday accused the central government of compromising the interests of Indian farmers by allegedly accepting a “detrimental” trade deal with the United States.

In a social media message, she stated, “The United States has announced that American farmers’ products will now be sold in the Indian market, benefiting rural America. Through this deal, Trump has secured advantages for American farmers.”

She questioned, “Millions of Indian farmers want to know the terms of this trade agreement. Is the Modi government planning to fully open India’s agricultural sector to the US? Will the government push Indian farmers into direct competition with American companies? Have the interests of our farmers been compromised?” Priyanka Gandhi demanded that the situation be clarified immediately before the public.

The Wayanad MP also shared a video clip of her party leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on social media. In the clip, he alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi left the decision on the US trade deal to others rather than taking responsibility himself.

In the video, Rahul Gandhi stated, “A national leader must provide direction. A leader cannot evade decisions or leave them on someone else’s shoulders. That is exactly what the Prime Minister has done.”

Congress ally and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh also questioned the fairness of the deal, asserting that the Indian government had accepted unfair terms set by the United States.

Congress spokesperson and General Secretary Ramesh further said, “Just as the ceasefire was announced by US President Trump, similarly, the trade deal announcement was made by Trump. It is being claimed that the deal is being done ‘at Modi’s request.’”

The Congress MP also questioned India’s apparent surrender of its interests to the US. On social media, she wrote, “Trump says India will move towards eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers against the United States. It seems India has fully opened its market to the US. This will impact Indian industries, traders, and farmers.”

She added, “The statement also mentions opening the agricultural sector to the US. What exactly is this deal? How are the safety and interests of our farmers being ensured?” Ramesh emphasized that the Modi government must keep Parliament and the entire country informed and share all the details.
