IPL Ticket Row: DK Shivakumar Responds to Congress MLA’s Demand

Karnataka: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has addressed the controversy over free tickets for legislators for matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar clarified that earlier, each MLA, MP, and minister used to receive one ticket. For the opening IPL match, if family members accompany them, they will now be allowed two tickets per person. However, arrangements for upcoming matches will be decided later.

“Four tickets cannot be given. Earlier, every MLA, MP, and minister was allotted one seat. Now we have requested that if family members attend, two tickets may be given. For the first match, they will get two tickets. We will discuss arrangements for future matches later,” he said.

His remarks came after Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar suggested that each legislator should receive at least five IPL tickets, arguing that elected representatives are “VIPs” and should not have to wait in queues.

The IPL 2026 season is set to begin on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the opening match.

Ahead of the tournament, Karnataka Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh chaired a high-level meeting with officials and representatives of the Karnataka State Cricket Association to review security and arrangements.

According to an official statement, discussions focused on safety measures inside and around the stadium, traffic management in the city, parking arrangements, drinking water availability, and other essential facilities for spectators. Officials also reviewed metro crowd management, train schedules, and enhanced security at metro stations.

Rajneesh directed authorities to strictly follow all conditions and precautionary measures laid down by the government for hosting the matches. She instructed all departments and organizations to remain on high alert and ensure regular coordination to prevent any untoward incidents.

After winning their maiden IPL title last season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter the new season as strong contenders. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad are expected to pose a tough challenge with a powerful batting lineup featuring players like Abhishek SharmaIshan KishanHeinrich Klaasen, and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

On the other hand, RCB will rely on the experience and firepower of stars like Virat KohliRajat Patidar, and Jitesh Sharma as both teams aim to start their campaign with a win.
