Sambhal violence: 10 more arrested, one linked to gang working for Dawood Ibrahim

Sambhal violence: Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested 10 more people accused of violence in Sambhal district during a court-ordered masjid survey on November 24 last year, including one Mulla Afroz, who is said to be a member of the gang allegedly linked to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Pakistani intelligence agency, Inter Service Intelligence (ISI), officials said on Sunday.

According to police, Afroz is accused of opening fire at police during the violence that broke out after locals objected to the survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid by a team of district administration and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Earlier this month, another person accused of firing at cops was arrested in Delhi’s Seelampur. Accused Salim, who allegedly shot at Circle Office (CO) Anuj Chaudhary, had been absconding since November 24. Two police personnel, including Superintendent of Police (SP) KK Vishnoi, suffered bullet injuries during the violence.A 12-bore pistol, five 12-bore cartridges, and a one-mm shell looted from the police were also recovered from him.

During their investigation, police discovered that Mulla Afroz had been associated with gangster Shariq Saata, one of Uttar Pradesh’s most-wanted criminals. It was revealed that Afroz had been in constant touch with Saata, who has been running his gang’s network in India from Dubai, police said.

Shariq Saata is reportedly affiliated with the fugitive underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim, and has connections to the ISI, the police added.

A native of Deepa Sarai in Sambhal, Saata has over 50 criminal cases registered against him in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Right after the violence on November 24, Indian intelligence agencies shared inputs about Shariq Saata with Sambhal Police.
